Started this Wednesday night, read way too late into Thursday morning, woke up bleary-eyed, and started reading again. Then, as soon as I finished it, I downloaded the sequel. I could not rest until I found out what happened to Layken and Will. How's that for an endorsement? I have not had a good experience with e-books so far. I know I'm going to piss a lot of people off by saying this, but it seems like many self-published authors have not paid their dues yet. I have not had a good experience with e-books so far. I know I'm going to piss a lot of people off by saying this, but it seems like many self-published authors have not paid their dues yet. They crank out a story with a scattershot, far-fetched plot which is bloated with grammatical and spelling errors. There is not a hint of an editor in sight. It drives me batty. I miss the filter that is in place when a renowned publishing house produces a book for our reading pleasure. That being said, I know, too, that "renowned" publishing houses also disseminate plenty of crap. But that crap tends to have fewer plot problems, grammatical mistakes, and spelling errors. I'm anal about this, I know, but I'm an editor. But I also know that there are lots of good authors out there seeking a publisher but are unable to get the traditional houses to even look at them. So, ebooks are a good alternative. I just wish the writers would spend more time on their second, third, fourth, etc. drafts or hire an editor to spot problems. Why the hell am I writing all this? Because it does pertain to this book, but on a lesser level than some of the other self-published books I've read, thank goodness. Slammed has all of the above-mentioned problems but I chose to overlook them because I loved the singular story and the characters. I have to be careful here because there are many secrets in the book that would be easy to reveal in a goodreads review. And that would be a shame because I'll bet most people will be very surprised by the plot twists. That is what I liked best about Slammed--the story unfolded in ways I would never have predicted. I also loved the characters--they just came alive on the page. I questioned whether some of the things they did were realistic but for the most part I found them believable. One aspect of the book that I did not expect to enjoy was the "slammed" poetry. Yes, some of it was groan-inducing but it was exactly what I'd expect to come out of a teenager's/young adult's brain. And it was heartfelt. There was a slight amateurish quality to Slammed, but, as I said about the poetry, it was heartfelt and heartwarming. And I really, really liked it.
