I was a little disappointed in this book. It's always referenced as an example of how women's sexuality is demonized in our society, and while that was certainly there, it didn't come across as strongly as I would have expected. In addition to the suffering that the scarlet letter brought Hester, it also afforded her autonomy and more freedom than other women had in her day, and she was able to get to a point where it no longer defined her. I read this in high school. I'm not actually positive I finished it, because I didn't like it at all - but I suppose that's enough to form an opinion (at least, my 16-year-old opinion).
