Read the first several chapters and I just don't care about any of the characters. The language used is occasionally really impressive, but not impressive enough to keep reading about these unlikeable, pretentious young people obsessed with appearances. The descriptions of their tortured artist personas was too much - just didn't care about them.

Before reading this book, I read a few reviews about this book because it topped a lot of best books lists. Most people seem to like the first part, following Lotto's self-centered point of view of his life and marriage. But the second part, from Mathilde's raw point of view, was the best part of this book for me. I didn't enjoy reading it, and would not recommend it to anyone. But I also couldn't stop reading it, and it is still living in my brain, which is interesting.
