My favorite way to read a novel is to savor it, make it last. But I tore through this in two days. It passed the test of me thinking about the characters when I wasn't reading it and even dreaming of the characters.

At times, I wondered if Lauren Groff was playing with us, trying to write like a man.

Themes: Lust, fidelity, Greek chorus, Marriage.

January 2019, re-reading for my book group.

GOD this book was such a slog. Lotto is a royal dick. Matilde is a real buzzkill. Everyone has obscene amounts of baggage. THE WOOOOOORST.

"Fates and Furies" was a bit of a slog for me to get through. I didn't remember the synopsis, so was surprised when the perspective changed to Mathilde's for Furies, but I actually enjoyed her story more than I did Lotto's because it went more into her character and how she became who she was when we saw her from Lotto's lens. Either way, I would've liked to see more into their everyday, which was obscured by the drama.

Didn't mind Lauren Groff's prose, and found some great quotes in this book.

I found the first third of this book wretched and really challenging to get through. This wasn't because the writing or plot was bad, but rather I found the character really hard to deal with. The book takes a twist part was through and becomes much more interesting to me to the point that I stayed up til 1:30am to finish it. A confusing literary work to be sure. Oh and I found all the classical lit/shakespeare quoting snobby and annoying, but I think I was supposed to. ...more

A challenging read, but not because of the prose but because of the lies of omission that snake through the grass in this book. Chaos, loneliness and fear drive many of the interactions in the second half to the point that it feels like a different book. Overall I'm glad I read it but I'm still unsettled. ...more
