I have to say, I found this book terribly difficult to get through. I despised Emma and really didnt think highly of any of the characters. It didnt even hold my interest at all until the world came tumbling down on her. Hope I enjoy the next classic I read much more. But I am told Flaubert has much more interesting work to explore. Maybe down the road...

I've probably read this novel three or four times since reading it as a junior in high school. I love it! My book club, after abandoning _Half of Woman is Woman_, has picked it up and I hope they're all enjoying it as much as I am.
I found a great review of it in the online version of _The New York Times_. Google it if you want to. ...more

I started this novel as research for my costume design MFA thesis, and the descriptions of clothes are gorgeous as expected, but I ended up just reading it for fun because the characters and story were so compelling. This had been on my list for awhile because I have a special place in my heart for banned books, and now I heartily recommend it.
