Overall, Middlesex is a well-written book. Even though it is a novel, Jeffrey Eugenides thoroughly researched intersexuality, making the book a realistic look into the life of a female hermaphrodite. The biggest problem with the book was the narrator—sometimes it was an omniscient narrator looking back into a history and time that the main character, Calliope, could know nothing about and sometimes it was Calliope herself. The great thing about the book was the narrative, it felt like an old friend telling you his life story. You just wanted to look into his eyes and listen carefully and feel what he was trying to portrait. It is very nicely written and you just want to read on and on. It is not a mystery, or comedy, or drama, it is real

My expectations for this book were high, and I put off reading it for some time. Thankfully, it was everything I'd heard it was. Amazing characters, rich language, savory descriptions. The author frequently changed the method of story-telling and narration. It was like he was entertaining himself while treating the reader to something new. And now I know more about hermaphoditism than ever before.
