Overall, Middlesex is a well-written book. Even though it is a novel, Jeffrey Eugenides thoroughly researched intersexuality, making the book a realistic look into the life of a female hermaphrodite. The biggest problem with the book was the narrator—sometimes it was an omniscient narrator looking back into a history and time that the main character, Calliope, could know nothing about and sometimes it was Calliope herself. Such a good read. Eugenides does a very good job of looping in and out of his story- past and current, his parent's story and his grandparents story. As a native of metro Detroit, the descriptions of Detroit, the suburbs and northern Michigan provided a nice dose of nostalgia. This is an excellent and perceptive look at what it means to be a sexual person, an American and a family member.
