I was probably the last woman in the U.S. to read this book. I can see why so many women read it--it's a great "woman-power" book! The main character, Dinah, is so likable; you want to read through to the end just to make sure everything turns out OK for her. The author does a wonderful job imagining the places where Dinah lived and what life was like in Old Testament times. I was able to lose myself in the book. I love this book, and I have mad respect for Anita Diamant, who weaves a realistic and beautiful history from a single line in the Bible. "The Red Tent" is a delicious celebration of womanhood, and the manner in which the author shapes her characters is nothing short of extraordinary. Diamant's creation of such lurid fictional lives offers, much like Kazantzakis' "The Last Temptation of Christ", a needed perspective shift on Biblical history.
