Let’s call it 3.5 stars. this book was on my list of “books a lot of my friends have read but I haven’t”. So now I have!

I have NOT seen the TV show based on this book yet.

I enjoyed the back and forth format of this book between Hanna's tapes and Clay's thoughts. Clay was a relatable character. A nice guy with a crush on a girl who he thinks is out of his reach. I love the concept and structure of this novel. I had been wanting to read it for some time, thinking it was a clever concept, but I was surprised by the protagonist and overall approach to constructing the narrative. Now I cannot imagine Asher writing it any other way. He pretty successfully captured the perspective of a "survivor" of a loved one's suicide, making us ask all of those questions we need to ask and, at the same time, giving us answers from that loved one. I enjoyed this book, it's a page turner, but I didn't totally buy the main character's motivations. And ultimately, I was disappointed that the real message of the book was "don't be mean to people, your actions have consequences" while missing an opportunity to focus more on a message like "SUICIDE IS BAD." ...more
