A difficult book to read -- not because of the quality (Andersen is a great writer), but because of the protagonist's bleak situation. The ending is incredibly powerful. I wish this were required in more high school English classes!

This was a bit of a difficult book to get through for me because of the writing. I think you have to get used to the interactions of the main character without her actually speaking in the book.
