This book would not normally take so long to read, but I was reading five other books at the time. I'm mixed in my review; I like that Melinda eventually speaks up, defends herself. But I'm also a bit frightened by the notion that it's somehow a better or more moral to fight back than to freeze. Empowering maybe, but mostly because we've taught girls it's not the right thing to do to freeze, when in fact, girls should feel equally about fleeing, fighting or freezing. They're all just biological

Many "must read YA" lists include this book so I finally got around to reading it. I listened to it on audio and it was a pretty quick "read". The story is told from the point of view of Melinda, a high school freshman who is being ostracized by pretty much everyone in her school. They are angry because she called the police from a party the month before school started and many kids got in trouble. This is such an incredibly powerful book. I first read it relatively shortly after it came out, and I remember how it hit me in the heart then. It still does. I think that anyone who has ever struggled with depression -- for any reason, but of course especially those who share traumatic experiences with Melinda -- will find large parts of their experiences reflected in Melinda's story, and in ways that make tears come to your eyes.

This is a much better book than I expected. The descriptions left me unexcited, but I was curious from our being on banned lists. It is shocking that this would be considered inappropriate for a youth audience. I realize the sexual implications can be hard for some parents to deal with, but I feel like I've read through and they might realize that this is not a book that glorifies sex and parties, quiet the opposite in fact.

This was a bit of a difficult book to get through for me because of the writing. I think you have to get used to the interactions of the main character without her actually speaking in the book. It's a slightly different take on the stream of consciousness, but it was well done. The author artfully crafted this book to emphasize it's point about voices being heard. I liked it after I got through with it, so a solid 4 stars.
