Junior Spirit is a boy living on a rez that believes he is being held back. So he decides to go to a white school 22 miles away, begging rides, hitching and sometimes walking to make it work. His Indian friends shun him and he has to work hard to fit in his new school. Trying to balance both worlds. And grow up at the same time. The character is a cartoonist as well and the cartoons in the book are great.

Sherman Alexie makes narrative voice seem totally effortless in this book. There was never a moment when I stopped believing Junior, or when I stopped liking him. Although the main character lives through some incredibly harrowing experiences in this short book, including (view spoiler), he relates it all in such a matter-of-fact way, never descending into melodrama or tragedy, even though his life experiences are very tragic. I loved this book. I laughed out loud on several occasions and cried, too. What I loved the most is that it showed both the absolute wonders and heartbreaking problems with the Native American culture. But this is a book that anyone, kid or adult, who has tried to go against the grain and be something bigger than him or herself can relate to. However, must say---high school only! Kind of mature for you, middle schoolers!

I read this for my book club. It's a young adult novel, which I think I would have liked a bit better if I were a young adult, but it was definitely still an enjoyable read. The main character has a unique, honest voice and the cartoons are pretty great, too! ...more
