My brother recommended this book, and I had no idea what to expect. I generally shy away from non-fiction because it often reads like a textbook instead of something enjoyable. This, however, was amazing. I honestly had no idea that the Japanese treated the POWs so horrifically, or that there was such a stark contrast between the treatment of POWs by the Germans and the Japanese. This harrowing story of survival is haunting and has given me such a new perspective on the war.

This was a great book! Each section contained controversy. The revelation of the amount and cause of all of the noncombatant air deaths was appalling to me. The time spent drifting in the Pacific on the life raft with no food or water while surrounded by sharks was horrific only relieved by the fact that I knew Louie had survived. The time spent in the Japanese POW camps and the cruelty shown by most of the captors was disgusting and heartrending. The part of the book that really made me take st ...more
