It's taken me awhile to get to Sally Rooney, but I knew I should. I finally did.
I appreciate her craft, but I can't say I enjoyed reading the story. I empathized with Marianne, and could understand why she sought out abusive relationships, but the hold Connell had on her reminded me of the way Hemingway's Frederic Henry's hold on Catherine Barkley, and in both cases I literally cringed while reading certain parts. I am calling this read, even though I am not finishing it. I will generally quit a book much earlier than this, I am about 75% of the way through, but I feel that the writing is on the wall for how this is going to end and I am not super interested. Marianne and Connell got me this far with the hope that it might change a bit, but it doesn't appear to be the case. So, I applaud everyone else who likes it but this one isn't doing anything for me.
