Xiomara Batista is a first-generation Dominican American teenage girl, living in Harlem, NY, and growing up in a very strict immigrant, religious household.

Xiomara struggles with finding her voice and identity, as her secular poetry verse and her free-thinking attitude does not coincide with her mother’s religious fundamentalism.
