Mahoney was raised in orphanages in Dublin. He has seen ghosts for much of his life, and his parentage is unclear. Upon the death of a nun who disliked him, he is given a letter that was left with him when he arrived at the first orphanage as a baby. The letter reveals his mother's name and the town from whence she came. It also suggests some skullduggery regarding her disappearance.
