I saw this come back in the Returns at the library I work at and decided to check it out. I had read it as a kid and remembered really taking a liking to it.
Fast forward several decades ...
The end is a bit cloying for modern tastes, but ... in some ways, it holds up surprisingly well. There was bullying in 1944, there's bullying now. People have a tendency to be somewhat afraid of "foreigners" in 1944. Also, there were socioeconomic differences. Guess what hasn't changed?
