Ms. Lowry’s fourth novel in the set that began with The Giver is a tale of heroism. Divided into three parts – Before, Between and Beyond – Claire is the main hero, the mother of the Son. The three communities are skillfully woven settings, standing firm in their world view. Selected as a Birthmother by her dystopian Community Before, the baby is taken from her immediately following a difficult birth. Though it is forbidden, she seeks to re-connect with the child as he is cared for by Nurturers.

Enjoyed the climb up the cliff very much, but still liked The Giver best of the series.
