Shelves: suspense-thriller, review-book, reviewed

WHEW! This book was quite a thrill ride, and one that I was glad to be on! It was my first time reading Karin Slaughter, and now I wonder why the heck I waited so long! In fact, I went on Goodreads and immediately added a whole bunch of her books to my “to-read” list before I even finished this one because it was that damn good.

This is a fast paced crime thriller involving two sisters who went through a very traumatic experience as young teens. Their dad is a very hated defense attorney, attract WHEW! This book was quite a thrill ride, and one that I was glad to be on! It was my first time reading Karin Slaughter, and now I wonder why the heck I waited so long! In fact, I went on Goodreads and immediately added a whole bunch of her books to my “to-read” list before I even finished this one because it was that damn good.

This is a fast paced crime thriller involving two sisters who went through a very traumatic experience as young teens. Their dad is a very hated defense attorney, attracting a lot of negative attention to their family and home. One night, two masked men enter their house and murder their mother in front of their eyes. Then, they force the two girls into the woods at gunpoint. Charlie, the younger sister, runs and escapes, while Sam is left behind.

Nearly 30 years later, Charlie finds herself in the midst of violence again when she gets caught up in a school shooting. It unleashes unwanted memories of the crime that wrecked her family many years before.

Holy smokes, what a story! From the very beginning, you are thrust right into the action and it never lets up. Though the book clocks in at over 500 pages, I still never wanted it to end and I was engaged and pulled in from start to finish. The story is incredibly layered and I was eager to pull back layer after layer as it went on. The length of the novel really allows you to get to know and understand its star players, particularly Charlie who is battling many demons as a result of the trauma she experienced as a kid… and now. There is so much at play here including family struggles and shattered relationships, all running parallel to the violent occurrences that Charlie finds herself at the center of.

Lots of twists and turns, as well as emotions and broken family ties, will keep you turning the pages nonstop. Mysteries are unraveled and discoveries are made that will have you second guessing everything while you read. This one is highly recommended to fans of crime thrillers, suspense, and mysteries. I LOVED it and can’t wait to read ALL of Slaughter’s other books! Two thumbs way up from me. ...more
