This book told the story of Cora, a child born in to slavery on a plantation in Georgia. Her grandmother Ajarry was the first to be taken from Africa and brought to America as a slave. Of the five children Ajarry had, only one lived past the age of ten, and that was Cora's mother Mabel. Mabel abandoned Cora to runaway when Cora was just a little girl. This is Cora's story of growing up as a slave and her struggle to escape slavery.

This was a tough read- both the difficult prose and the subject matter of slavery. I had to re-read several paragraphs to make sure I understood what was going on. It turned out to be a timely read, with what is going on right now surrounding the murder of George Floyd. What slaves endured, even after attaining so called “freedom” was cruel and despicable. And the ripple effects are still present today.
