A good read for a cold, snowy winter night, especially if you love fairy tales. Set in the fourteenth century in the north of "Rus", what we call Russia, a woman named Marina bears a daughter called Vasya, who she claims will have special powers. Marina dies shortly thereafter, and her husband Pyotr Vladimirovich and a nurse are left to raise the enchanted child who talks to kitchen spirits and roams the woods without fear.
