I really enjoyed the gothic side of this novel and its allusions to The Mysteries of Udolpho, which I had to read a portion of for my British Lit class. Austen does an impeccable job of satirizing gothic literature and her heroine, Catherine Morland, did not disappoint. While I still liked Emma and Pride and Prejudice more, I think this is my 3rd favorite Austen novel, if I had to rank them.

I love the gothic elements of this book and its commentary on the form of the novel. I also see a bit of myself in the heroine-daydreamer with an overactive imagination. I love this novel!

Eh. Would have liked more Austinesque depth of characters. But it was an early book of hers.
