I know SJM series can be a rollercoaster of quality and I'm told this is her best series. The first book was fine, but didn't grab me the way I felt it should have. Sure, I'm interested in the story but I didn't particularly love any of the characters and many of the relationships felt very flat (100% on or 100% off - just declaring we are friends now makes it so, etc). Also several parts of the book or scenes felt like they were straight up lifted from other works - The Hunger Games, L ...more

One of my good friends recommended this book to me saying she loved it, so I went into this with high expectations. This book was not good at all. The main character is this whiny, vapid teenager who is supposedly this amazing, renowned assassin but throughout the book that was barely apparent. I have been putting off reading this series for a long time. I don’t know why…maybe it is because I read ACOTAR, and even though I enjoyed it, I just felt like there are far better romantasies out there, and I didn’t want to waste my time.
But I actually enjoyed this one! Some folks said I might have a hard time getting into it, but I’m all about FMCs getting thrown into situations where they have to train and fight. I’m looking forward to the next book, which surprised me!

I really liked this book and I am interested to see how the story develops in the sequels! I think Sarah Maas is wonderful in her creation of new worlds and characters. I didn't love this one quite enough to bless it with 5 stars, but it was a solid story and I look forward to reading Crown of Midnight :)
