It took me almost about 100 pages to get into this book, but I'm glad I persevered. I enjoy fiction that is based on facts, and this book is an excellent example of that. Sue Monk Kidd explains what is fact, and what is fiction at the end of the story. I was amazed at the bravery (often foolishly so) exhibited by the Gremke' sisters, Sarah and Nina. I'm still a sucker for Oprah's book club selections, and this is a great one. It's historical fiction, based on the Grimke sisters, who fought for the ending of slavery well before it's time. I really enjoy books from this time period (1830s) It flips between the viewpoints of Sarah Grimke and her personal slave named "Handful" ( given to her on her 11th birthday) . I enjoyed the symbolism of birds and flight, which represent freedom in the book. A wonderful read.
