We heard about this place when we were researching things to see on our autumn trip through the Deep South and even though we were running late to Huntsville we made a point of stopping here. We naively thought we were going to look at a stone wall and go on our merry way, but Mr. Hendrix had other plans. We were welcomed personally by him and told that if we wanted to we could hear his story before we toured at our own pace. He does this for everyone, even though he is 87 years old and was suffering pain from a run-in with a car. He sets up some plastic chairs in his beautiful woodlands area just off the Natchez Trace and tells his story and will answer any question you ask.
It is a beautiful place and he is a beautiful man. The story of his ancestor is amazing, and one that is told in an almost fairy tale tone, but it is all true. What Mr. Hendrix is too modest to say is that the story of a man who spends decades of his life and goes through many pickups in the process of creating a memorial wall by hand without any mortar is just as beautiful and compelling. Over 8 million pounds of stone!
