I try to some children's lit every year because I'm interested in what my niece and the kids at her school are reading. I've heard about this book for years, and it came highly recommended, but it didn't do much for me. I know I'm not the target audience, but as I said, and from what you can see from my books, I read a lot of Middle Grade and YA stuff, so the fact of my age would be only one factor as to why I didn't like it. My 8 year old son Ben was reading this in school and asked me to read it too so we could discuss. I enjoyed it so much!
Rereading this book as an adult was a much better experience than my first time around. I was better able to grasp the subtleties of the story, which made the overall story better. I will be interested to hear what my 8-12 book club thinks about it.
History, comedy, old worlds and new worlds converging. This book appealed to the archaeologist in me (was an archaeologist before becoming a librarian).
