Really enjoyed "City of Thieves" - you know the main character survives, because he is relaying his war story to his grandson, the journalist. The war, the siege on Leningrad - these were taboo subjects until Lev decided to share his story with his grandson. Benioff brings Leningrad and it's people to life. At times proud, stubborn, starving, and a strange sense of dark humor that pervades most of the conversations. Lev is thrown into a cell with an accused deserter - a handsome Russian soldier ...more
