I did not like this book, and if it wasn't June's pick for Let's Read About Feminism, I wouldn't have finished it. As I've said before in talking about this book, my biggest problem with it is that the main character, Lily, a 14-year-old white girl in 1964 South Carolina, spends the whole book slowly overcoming her racism due to the "magical" friendship of black women. I took notes on several instances that made me roll my eyes in annoyance and frustration.
