My rating for Spinning Silver conflicts me because, while I did not hate the book, I felt a bit disappointed. I started reading this in early November 2022 and I just couldn’t push through -it was not that the story was bad or that I hated the characters. Simply, I found the writing too dense and after I finished a chapter, I didn’t feel the need to pick up the book again -it was only through the audiobook that I was able to conclude it.

My rating for Spinning Silver conflicts me because, while I did not hate the book, I felt a bit disappointed. I started reading this in early November 2022 and I just couldn’t push through -it was not that the story was bad or that I hated the characters. Simply, I found the writing too dense and after I finished a chapter, I didn’t feel the need to pick up the book again -it was only through the audiobook that I was able to conclude it.

In the story, we follow the lives of Miryem and Irina, two young women facing difficult circumstances – Miryem is the daughter of a moneylender who has fall in disgrace and hence, cannot support his family, while Irina is the daughter of a nobleman who has never look at her with other than disdain and only acknowledges her existence when he sees an opportunity to marry her to the tsar. In this historical setting, humans deal with the Staryk, magical creatures who come from a frozen, cold world, destroying life where they can and thirsty for gold. Miryem has an encounter with one of these creatures who forces her to produce gold from silver -and in this quest she meets Irina, who has married a demon and not a tsar. Both of her lives in danger and it is then that they come together to save those they love and the whole world.

So, the premise was amazing, and I loved the setting, the characters, the historical background, and folklore. However, I think the pace through me off the story as well as the writing style. It felt it was too slow. Also, there was a bit of passion missing from our main characters -we know they are brave but I felt this could have been shown a bit more. Likewise, another issue that threw me off the story was the many points of view included in the book. Characters were fine, but out of nowhere, we had the perspective of the brother of girl working for Miryem, and from Irina’s nanny, and from other characters that I think were not needed. I don’t mean their stories weren’t interesting but rather, their perspective could have been told from the voices of our two main characters.
With that said, I must say I fear fantasy might not be, at least at this moment, the genre for me.

Con todo y que le di 2 estrellas, la realidad es que dar esta calificación a Spinning Silver me conflictúa porque de hecho no odié el libro, pero éste si me decepcionó. Comencé a leer a principios de noviembre de 2022 y en verdad no podía avanzar, pero no eran ni que la historia no fuera interesante o que odiara a los personajes. Sucedió que la escritura se me hizo muy densa, y cada vez que terminaba un capítulo, no sentía la necesidad de retomar la historia de manera inmediata. En realidad, solo fui capaz de concluir la lectura por audio libro y dudo que hubiera podido terminarlo de otra manera.

La novela trata de dos jóvenes mujeres, Miryem e Irina, que viven circunstancias complicadas en algún país de Europa del Este probablemente en el periodo medieval. Miryem es la hija de un prestamista judío que tiene un corazón tan noble que le impide cobrar sus deudas, por lo que la familia vive en la pobreza, e Irina es hija de un caballero de la nobleza que la considera insignificante, hasta que ve la oportunidad de casarla con el zar. De forma paralela, los humanos enfrentan a unas criaturas fantásticas, de un mundo de hielo, conocidos como los Staryk, quienes son responsables de las constantes heladas que azotan la región, con su estela de muerta y ambición. Miryem tiene un fatal encuentro con el rey de estas criaturas quien la obliga a cambiar la plata en oro, y en esta tarea es cuando conoce a Irina, quien es casada con el zar, pero sin saber que un demonio habita el cuerpo de su marido. Juntas ambas deben idear un plan para evitar la destrucción de sus seres queridos y del mundo entero.

Sin duda, la trama suena interesante y sí me gustó la ambientación histórica, los personajes y el misterio que rodeaba a humanos y demonios por igual. Sin embargo, creo que el ritmo de la historia no funcionó, así como el estilo narrativo. Fue demasiado lento. También sentí que la autora pudo construir personajes un poquito más intensos -en sus emociones, en la forma de ver el mundo. Sabemos que son mujeres valientes, pero creo que se dijo más de lo que se demostró. Otra cosa que me pareció lentísima fue la inclusión de tantos puntos de vista. No tengo un tema con el número de personajes, pero a la mitad del libro, se introducen las perspectivas de aquellos que ni personajes secundarios eran -como el hermano de Wanda, la chica que ayudaba en casa de Miryem, o la nana de Irina. Y en verdad que no había necesidad porque le restá fluidez a la historia -creo que hubiéramos podido conocer de sus vidas a en las voces de los otros personajes principales.
Tras esta lectura, concluyo también que probablemente, la literatura fantástica realmente no es para mí. ...more

¡Terminado! No puedo ni empezar a contar lo muchísimo que me ha gustado, creo que incluso más que "Un cuento oscuro", aunque es difícil elegir solo uno.
Me ha encantado todo, la historia, la narración, los personajes, como evolucionan, como se complementan y como se van uniendo las historias, ¡Es genial! Tiene una ambientación estupenda y un aire de cuento tradicional y folklore que me han dejado sin palabras, justo lo que me gusta.

Bastante entretenido aunque la descripción de una situación desde diferente punto de vista se me hizo repetitivo. Me gustó como la autora tomó las premisas de los cuentos infantiles y desarrolló su libro.
