Aunque al principio me costó entrar en la historia, por razones personales más que por el libro en sí, más tarde me atrapó de tal forma que me parecía estar presente en la vida de los protagonistas.

Este libro es una verdadera delicia, delicado, sin grandes aspavientos ni florituras, pero que envuelve al lector en una “tela de araña” que lo atrapa para no dejarlo escapar.

Me ha gustado, a pesar de no ser un género ni temática que lea mucho. Está bien escrito y se nota que la autora se ha documentado mucho para intentar plasmar la sociedad japonesa, la cultura coreana, el racismo que imperaba, la separación de las Coreas, todas las costumbres y formas de vida de esas épocas,... mediante la narración de las vicisitudes de una familia. No puedo describir el miedo que le tenia a este libro, estaba interesada en él pero nunca me animaba a comenzarlo. Es una lectura más emotiva que dura, sus personajes pasan por mucho sufrimiento pero no llega al grado del morbo.

Como acompañas a esta familia por tantos años y generaciones, me queda la sensación que ellos siguen viviendo sus vidas luego que me despida de ellos y hace mucho tiempo no lo experimentaba al terminar un libro.

I can't believe it took me a year to read this really, really good book. Pachinko was a masterpiece; it made me cry and laugh and cherish with its protagonists, and care so deeply all the way. I was saddened every time something bad happened, and felt joy when things went right. My attachment to this book is not only sentimental: I learnt so much about Koreans and Japanese Koreans in such a beautiful, tragic story. I loved several characters, but especially

I can't believe it took me a year to read this really, really good book. Pachinko was a masterpiece; it made me cry and laugh and cherish with its protagonists, and care so deeply all the way. I was saddened every time something bad happened, and felt joy when things went right. My attachment to this book is not only sentimental: I learnt so much about Koreans and Japanese Koreans in such a beautiful, tragic story. I loved several characters, but especially Sunja. Sunja must be one of the first characters I have read that could inspire so much awe in small actions, whose silence was a sign of strength and not shyness. Accompanying her since her birth was something magic, and a kind of story telling I don't see a lot but worked very well in this story and the message it was trying to share.

The writing was one of my favorite things in this book. It was nothing glamourous nor pompous; it was simple and strong like its protagonists; it didn't try to be what it was not. This made such a big story digestible and still managed to capture complex feelings in few words.

There are just a few reasons for me not giving it five stars: the first one is that it took me a long time to get invested in the characters and the story, and this was an important part of a book such as this. Like, I'd say only when I got to 25% of the book I started to care deeply for them. I had to force myself to get to that point. The only other reason is that I would have liked to get more closure with some of the characters; I do understand that this is a way to imitate life itself, and that we will never get to know lots of things, but I would have liked another kind of story still.

Overall, an extremely important and totally recommended lecture. One of my favorites of 2018!

¡Que libro más maravilloso! Me ha encantado descubrir la historia de esta familia a través de varias generaciones, los problemas que surgen y cómo los afrontan. Finally I'm updating my reviews.

I really liked this book and the way it weaves all the lives to create a great story.

Favorite character: I don't have a favorite character since I liked almost all of them but I liked Isak
Least favorite character: I didn't like Hana
What I liked: I learned a lot -but still, not enough- about Korean history.
What I didn't like: the way things felt so slow and detailed in the beginning and a little rushed -going over a few years in a couple of pages- in the last chapt ...more
