I took a leap out of my comfort zone reading Homegoing.

Homegoing is Yaa Gyasi's debut novel. It follows the lineage of two sisters from Ghana. Homegoing is basically a book of short stories with each story focusing on a different family member. The timeline of the book spans hundreds of years, but there is a familial thread connecting all of the stories.

Homegoing has received tremendous praise and has been nominated for several book awards. As for my personal taste, I can liken reading Homegoing

“Weakness is treating someone as though they belong to you. Strength is knowing that everyone belongs to themselves”

Homegoing is a saga spanning for over a hundred years, following the two very different lives and destinies of two half-sisters –Esi and Effia, born in present day Ghana. Effia, the beauty, is married to an English man and her descendants live powerful lives in Africa; Esi is captured and sold into slavery. The sisters never know about one a

“Welcome home.”

I'm still speechless. I don't know how the author managed to tell such a nuanced, complex and vast story in only ~300 pages. Homegoing is the story of a family separated by chance, the descendants of two half-sisters, and each chapter follows a generation of them. The descendants of the sisters Effia and Esi grow up to have very different lives, even if they started in very similar conditions: Esi's family to slavery in America, and Effia's in Ghana.

How could he explain ..

I finished this book a few days ago and had to pause before writing a review. This is one of the best books I've read this year! Yaa Gyasi is a gifted writer and a wonderful storyteller. The structure of the book could have been a failure- it spans over century and begins with two half-sisters who do not know each other and the lineage each created based on their respective life as a result of the slave trade. I found the stories based in the Gold Coast absolutely riveting, I felt like I was the ...more

Me gustaría seguir leyendo libros suyos
