Tan inteligente que es Roxane Gay. Me llega a dar rabia. Porque una trata de racionalizar las injusticias del mundo, para poder vivir con ellas y viene esta mujer y de un manotazo le saca a uno la venda de los ojos.

I am a bad feminist. I’m all for equal rights but I’m the cool girl, I don’t want to be connected to those women marching half naked on the street. I don’t like absolutes nor confrontation, but I always aim at being better. I picked up Bad Feminist because I want to learn. This book is in every list of feminist must reads and it’s well awarded* People have told me this is the perfect entry way into feminism and I want to get headed that way.

Imagine my surprise, 5 chapters in, when I started 2.5~

This book is in every list of feminist must reads and it’s well awarded* People have told me this is the perfect entry way into feminism and I want to get headed that way.

Imagine my surprise, 5 chapters in, when I started considering that I may hate this book.

Roxane Gay has a strong personality. This book is about her and her opinions. I have no idea why it was marketed as being about feminism, because that’s just one of the multiple topics that Gay covers on these blog-like chapters, where she (most of the times) rants about several matters.
She starts talking about flawed feminism and how we all have privilige, but quickly moves onto her university years and how she navigated those being a woman of color; then to the multiple rules in scrabble championships (???) and into reviewing books, tv series or movies that she liked or hated - be it from a race or feminist lense.

She almost lost me there. So much of this book is pop, so very tied to American culture, that it turned hard to follow. She quotes American political events I know nothing about with little explanation, she talks about some series I’m not familiar with and I don’t really care about.
I stayed because of her personal experiences as a woman of color and because some of her commentary actually challenged my opinions.

Gay is insightful and instrospective. I liked her because of that. She knows when to accept flaws in her, if she was not the targeted audience for something, she even contradicts herself at points. And she really makes you think - even if I don’t end up fully agreeing with her on some topics. She is analytical and makes some very good points about our modern culture and human nature.

Some of the essays bored me to death, some made me cry (her personal experiences are quite hard to read), some commentary made me laugh out loud, some made me agree enthusiastically with her and some made me mad at her because I felt she was being shortsighted.
A good part of these essays made me think. These are good for starting a conversation I think… but in some of them, I didn’t get what point Gay was trying to make or felt that the point was graced quite superficially.

This book did not do what I expected. I wanted more exploration of the bad feminist or on feminism in general, I wanted a full in depth discussion.
It actually confirmed some of the things I already knew about feminism and it got me thinking about race (something not quite present in my day to day as a latina).
I appreciate the amount of times it made me pause and scribble some notes, but it mostly goes all over the place and sometimes falls short on the topics I personally did find interesting.

Roxane Gay plantea que es una "mala feminista" como respuesta a la idea colectiva de que solo existe una manera de ser feminista (llena de estereotipos, por supuesto) y nos comparte todas sus experiencias y su punto de vista en distitnos temas de interés.
