A story of slavery with literary license, anachronisms and a railroad that never existed. Cora is a woman trying to escape a life of slavery through the Underground Railroad.

Favorite character: Cora, for her resilience, bravery and strength.
Least favorite character: Terrance, really I don't think I need to say more.
Least favorite part: Tennessee chapter was the one I enjoyed less.

I read this one in the translated version and I think I should have read it in English, oh, well...

I liked it a lot but didn’t quite loved it enough?
It felt sort of incomplete for me, it gives you just the right amount of hope in every chapter to keep you going but then in the last 20 pages Colson decides to kill every crumb of hope you had. I know this is a book meant to illustrate the horrors of slavery, but I was expecting a bit more on the history of the Underground Railroad…. I don’t know what was I expecting but I’m sure I didn’t read the book I was waiting for.

I loved the writing and

This book is fantastic! I see why Colson Whitehead won the National Book award for this book. The story is riveting and the writing is so crisp. I found myself so engrossed in the story line. To understand what slaves endured and to see how some had the gumption and courage to escape and to read how slavery and Blacks were viewed North and South is the true gift of this literary gem. This book is officially on my list of top books. I highly recommend it.
