It is very difficult to review a book that is well-loved worldwide and which has marked generations in the African American community, for fear of being misunderstood. It is difficult because, unfortunately, Angelou’s memoir did not work for me. Not because of the themes nor her experience (which, if anything, are still painfully relevant issues today that still need to be addressed) but because of the execution and the writing style. It is very difficult to review a book that is well-loved worldwide and which has marked generations in the African American community, for fear of being misunderstood. It is difficult because, unfortunately, Angelou’s memoir did not work for me. Not because of the themes nor her experience (which, if anything, are still painfully relevant issues today that still need to be addressed) but because of the execution and the writing style. I will say it bluntly: I found the book boring in many parts and thought about DNF it more than once. The tone of the book seemed too plain, too flat, and we had chapters which where emotional rollercoasters followed by chapters too slow and which added nothing to the story (for example, the long descriptions of Church services). At first it was very interesting to get into Angelou’s world as a child, learning how life was in 1930s America and the pain of living both abandoned by her parents and in an obscenely racist society. Angelou shows a life in poverty, in social injustice (and this is a reminder of how things have not changed much) while also being surrounded by loving figures such as her grandmother, her brother and other key people from the community and family. This is a memoir of losses, of injustice, but also of resilience. However, the tone of the book, the ups and downs of the narrative made it hard for me to navigate through this well-loved American classic and from the middle to the end of the book it was very hard to follow along.

Es muy difícil reseñar un libro que es muy querido en todo el mundo y que ha marcado a generaciones en la comunidad afroamericana, por miedo a ser malinterpretada. Es difícil porque, lamentablemente, las memorias de Angelou no funcionaron para mí y me pareció un libro complicado de leer y disfrutar. Esto no se debió a los temas o a su propia experiencia (los cuales, si algo demuestran, es que siguen siendo temas sociales relevantes y que necesitan solucionarse) sino por la ejecución y el estilo narrativo. Lo diré tal cual: el libro me pareció aburrido en muchas partes, lento, y estuve a punto de abandonarlo a la mitad. El tono me pareció muy plano, considerando lo que se narraba y había capítulos que eran emocionalmente impactantes y brutales, seguidos por otros que realmente no aportaban a la historia (como anécdotas de personajes que no vuelven a aparecer o las descripciones de los servicios de la iglesia). Entiendo y no dudo que estas personas o eventos tuvieran un impacto en la autora cuando era una niña, pero muchos no se vuelven a retomar por lo cual sentí que sobraban. En principio, resultó muy interesante conocer el mundo de Maya Angelou en su infancia, de cómo era la vida en el Estados Unidos de 1930 y el dolor de crecer sin sus padres sumado a una sociedad obscenamente racista. La autora retrata cómo es crecer en la pobreza y en la injusticia social (y esto es un recordatorio de que muchas cosas no han cambiado) pero al mismo tiempo, estar rodeadas de figuras fundamentales como la abuela, su hermano y otros miembros de la familia y comunidad que construyeron un círculo de solidaridad. En ese sentido, esta historia retrata pérdidas, injusticias, pero también la resiliencia del ser humano. Sin embargo, el tono y los sube y bajas narrativas hicieron difícil mi lectura de este clásico estadounidense y desde la mitad hasta el final me fue muy complicado mantener el interés.

Si esta narración fuera de ficción, sería difícil de leer pero al tratarse de una biografía es doloroso: las vivencias de Margaret desde su infancia van más allá de lo que se puede imaginar. A pesar de todo, ella logra sobrevivir y llegar a un momento de su vida en el que puede reflexionar acerca de lo sucedido.

Aunque es un libro autobiográfico muy sincero, esperaba que me conmoviera y me emocionara un poco más su historia. En "Yo sé por qué canta el pájaro enjaulado", el primer volumen de 7 libros autobiográficos escritos por Maya Angelou, nos muestra lo que fue su infancia y primera adolescencia siendo criada al sur de los Estados Unidos en los años 30.

I've been meaning to read this one for a long time because I read good reviews about it and it didn't disappoint.

I can't do the regular review because (favorite character, least favorite character) but I can say I loved her Momma. Annie Henderson reminded me so much of my grandma. Since my mom worked, from the morning until 7:30 pm I was left under the care and watch of my grandma so I like to say I was raised by both of them.
