Hay libros que llegan a mis manos sin siquiera saber que existían, este es uno de ellos, no estoy muy segura de que habría leído este libro si hubiera sido decisión mí hacerlo, sin embargo, como muchas veces sucede, sin esperarlo me ha dejado con un buen sabor de boca.

Gemma Doyle es una chica a la que le cambia la vida de un día para otro, el día que muere su madre es llevada a una academia de señoritas donde se entera muy lentamente de cuál es su destino.

Me ha gustado la historia, me ha parecid Hay libros que llegan a mis manos sin siquiera saber que existían, este es uno de ellos, no estoy muy segura de que habría leído este libro si hubiera sido decisión mí hacerlo, sin embargo, como muchas veces sucede, sin esperarlo me ha dejado con un buen sabor de boca.

Gemma Doyle es una chica a la que le cambia la vida de un día para otro, el día que muere su madre es llevada a una academia de señoritas donde se entera muy lentamente de cuál es su destino.

Me ha gustado la historia, me ha parecido interesante y además original, tiene además algunas temas de rebeldía, estando ubicada en el siglo XIX, la autora deja muy claro cual es el lugar que deberían de tener las mujeres en la sociedad y es precisamente la rebeldía hacía esa regla es la que hace que estas cuatro chicas se unen, el no querer abrazar el destino que les ha tocado, la forma en que la autora maneja el tema me parece muy bien manejado y lo hace interesante.

Pero el tema del libro es la magia y la lucha del bien contra el mal y todo eso enmarcado en una historia totalmente juvenil y es ahí donde se encuentra la parte que menos me ha gustado del libro, tal vez si yo fuera una adolescente sería más fácil para mí empatizar con la protagonista y sus amigas, pero me desespera mucho la inmadurez, la poca sensatez y la forma en que se manejan estas chicas, pero claro hay que ponerlo en contexto y no son más que unas pubertas que tienen en sus manos un poder que no pueden y no saben manejar.

Esa parte además hace la narrativa algo pesada en ocasiones, desde mi punto de vista, este libro se pudo haber escrito en menos páginas, llegas al 50% del libro sin que realmente avance la historia, únicamente centrada en más de lo mismo y las correrías de cuatro adolescentes, mientras que esperaba que me explicarán la situación central, esto no ocurre si no hasta casi el 75% de avance en el libro y eso me ha desesperado un poco, por supuesto no debemos perder de vista que es una trilogía y hay que echarle mucho rollo al asunto para que pueda lograrse tal cosa.

Sin embargo y muy a pesar de los peros que pudiera encontrarle es una historia entretenida y en general me ha gustado lo suficiente para querer continuar con el siguiente libro

If I could, I would say 2.85 stars.

I had been wanting to read a book situated on the Victorian period with a little twist to make it interesting, in this case: magic and paranormal thingies. This is not a deep and meaningful book; this is just silly and entertaining reading.

This is the story of Gemma Doyle. Gemma’s first vision came to her the same day she lost her mother. She blames herself. At Spence Academy, a finishing school for young ladies, she will keep unraveling her hidden powers and s If I could, I would say 2.85 stars.

This is the story of Gemma Doyle. Gemma’s first vision came to her the same day she lost her mother. She blames herself. At Spence Academy, a finishing school for young ladies, she will keep unraveling her hidden powers and she’ll learn how to let her mom go. An unexpected friendship will bond her to a group of young girls, which will give each other the courage to think independently from what they are being told to.

I didn’t quite get to liking Gemma Doyle. She has a particular sharp tongue and agile mind (for that time), but most of her actions are selfish and not quite thought through. She keeps getting into situations where she asks herself “How could this happen?” and I just feel like shouting: you get it coming girl!! Of course, the plot would never move on if she wouldn’t commit any silly mistakes.

The bonding of these young girls was really unexpected for me. I, personally, would never trust ANY of those girls (not even Ann).Surprisingly, that didn’t bother me. That actually taught me how people are more complex than being inherited bad or good, just because they’re mean to you or not. Great lesson there!

As for the romantic interest, if it can be called a romantic interest, Kartik’s character is really underdeveloped. He’s just a young man whose only way of communication is based on empty threats. What is to love about that? And yet, the interest is there. It was the sexual exploration phase what really added something for me, much more than other YAs, cause that was actually a really taboo subject in that period.

My main complaint about this book is that it seems to be thought completely to be part of a trilogy. The characters are too slightly developed, and all the magic world building is quite shallow.

I always feel like immediately keep reading the following books on a series. Even when the first book is not that good, I need to close all the loose ends. Oddly, it’s different with this one. I can’t help but feeling it will only get worse. We will see.
