Me ha encantado la novela, incluso más que Dracula de Bram Stoker y no sé por qué la historia de la literatura ha dejado en un semi-olvido esta obra de Le Fanu. Me ha encantado la novela, incluso más que Dracula de Bram Stoker y no sé por qué la historia de la literatura ha dejado en un semi-olvido esta obra de Le Fanu. Escrita unos años antes de la publicación de Dracula, Carmilla es la historia del primer vampiro en la narrativa occidental, y la villana es una mujer -así es: Carmilla es una vampiresa que ha vivido por siglos, alimentándose de otras jóvenes mujeres. Es así como Laura, la narradora, cuenta cómo su vida es tocada por la aparición de Carmilla, quien se convierte en su compañera y su única amiga. Laura ha crecido apartada de la sociedad, en un antiguo castillo en Austria, sin más compañía que sus nanas y su padre. Un día, un carruaje ocupado por tres mujeres se detiene frente al castillo y la mayor le pide al padre de Laura cuidar a su hija Carmilla, quien se encuentra indispuesta para continuar el viaje. La familia acepta y Laura es la más feliz, al tener una compañera de su edad después de tantos años. Pocos días después de la llegada de Carmilla, las mujeres en lugares cercanos al palacio empiezan a languidecer y a morir y el secreto de la joven compañera es revelado.

La construcción del ambiente y del terror en esta historia me ha parecido mucho mejor lograda que en Drácula y lo que más he apreciado, es que no deja cabos sueltos (algo que sí me pareció que la historia de Stoker tiene). Carmilla es una figura oscura, gótica, venida del infierno pero que curiosamente, se siente atraída hacia Laura. He disfrutado también de la información que se da sobre esta vampiresa -su origen, su seducción hacia hombres y mujeres, su modo de operar. Entre tumbas antiquísimas y palacios austriacos abandonados, Le Fanu construyó una historia que inaugura el género y que ofrece, además, un retrato de ciertos temas que en la época estaban prohibidos -erotismo, homosexualidad y el inicio de una fascinación por lo oscuro como lo son los vampiros. Insisto, aunque corta, esta historia me pareció mucho más completa que el Drácula de Stoker, y sin dejar cabos sueltos.

Lo único que lamento un poco es que escuché la historia como audiolibro y me costó muchísimo entender al narrador, que no sé si de pronto exageró el acento inglés.... pero con ello, sin duda regresaré de nuevo a la obra y me gustaría hacerlo leyendo el libro.

I found Carmilla a much more compelling and rounded story than Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and I wonder why this novella has been kind of forgotten by world literature. Carmilla is no other than the first vampire to appear on Western fiction and she is a woman, so we are talking here about a bad, devilish main character! The story is told by Laura, a young woman who has lived in isolation with her father and two nannies in a forgotten castle in Austria. One day, three women appear by their home and the older woman asks Laura’s father to welcome Carmilla, her daughter, who is too weak to continue travelling. Carmilla and Laura are of the same age and Laura is delighted to have a female companion, as she’s been alone most of the time. But soon after this strange arrival, young women are attacked and die within a couple of days in mysterious circumstances.

What I truly appreciated about this story is how Le Fanu was able to build a dark atmosphere and story within a couple of pages and he gave us all the information needed to become acquainted with the figure of the vampire and centuries of folklore, something that I personally felt Dracula lacked. Likewise, there is a strange, erotic relation between Carmilla and Laura, while at the same time it is clear that Carmilla is a seductress to both men and women alike –and her seduction has allowed her to live eternally. Le Fanu built a great story, with gothic vibes and all the elements that truly make the reader feel immersed in the darkness of vampirism, blood and seduction.

I listen this story as an audiobook but I am definitely interested in revisiting it and read the physical book. ...more

Lo he disfrutado mucho. La forma en la que se cuenta la historia, la época, el misterio y el canguelo a ratos.

Esta historia es una de las pioneras del vampirismo. Trata de una joven que narra sus experiencias pasadas con una vampiro que se hacía llamar Carmilla, y de cómo casi termina en sus garras.

Crítica

Es una historia antigua, de antes de 1900, por lo que el estilo de narración es distinto al de las novelas actuales, pero no por ello mala. El autor hace uso de un lenguaje más formal, pero no por ello deja de resultar ameno.

Carmilla

A girl is received as guest in a house where a young girl is sad because her friend died not long ago, the guest girl has some weird customs and proclivities, he also from time to time, speaks romantically to the house girl, yet they develop a friendship, young girls in town get sick and die all around, and finally the house girl gets sick too. The friends Uncle arrives and tells the girl father about Vampires, and they discover, the guest girl, Carmilla is one.

It was an interesting story about the first vampire before Dracula's story. It wasn't as dark as I wished for it to be. I don't know what to say about this story, I just felt that it shows us somehow like in so many classic books that naive teenage girls from some can be easily used and corrupted when they are under the influence of much more experienced bad people, the theme vampire in this story might have other connotations than what we are used to that's my own opinion. ...more

Es una de esas historias que conozco desde hace años y estaba muy familiarizada con la trama antes de leerla pero creo que eso arruinó la experiencia para mí. Es interesante y muy importante pero no es lo que esperaba.
