Fue tan entretenido como me habían prometido, un libro ligero que te hace buscar mas sobre lo que dice, quizás lo que mas me agrado fue el protagonista, ya que es difícil encontrar protas proactivos y ambiciosos, o quizás yo no he estado leyendo los libros adecuados, en fin fue refrescante leer sobre alguien que no se saboteaba solo.

Supongo que tenía grandes expectativas con este libro, todas ellas infladas por comentarios de conocidos que decían que el libro les había encantado. No se puede negar que es un libro que se lee rápido y que es entretenido, además que plantea ciertas cuestiones que permitiría una charla interesante. Sin embargo toda mi experiencia la defino como una mala película de esas de ciencia ficción para televisión. Leer “Ready Player One” significó para mi dos cosas: la primera de ellas es regresar a mi mundo juvenil literario transportado por la nostalgia “ochentera” representada en las múltiples referencias descritas en el libro; la segunda es ratificar que efectivamente soy un nerd/geek. Ernest Cline es un autor que utiliza sus recuerdos infantiles y juveniles, para darle forma a esta novela de acción y juego futurista. Ernest Cline es un autor que utiliza sus recuerdos infantiles y juveniles, para darle forma a esta novela de acción y juego futurista. Valiéndose del nacimiento computacional y sistemas de videojuegos, logra crear un ambiente de remembranza transportándonos a esos momentos en donde conocíamos las aventuras de un joven norteamericano, cuyos problemas de la adolescencia se resolvían siempre en familia: Family Ties. La novela nos cuenta como la humanidad logra sumergirse en el mundo de la simulación, llevando al planeta a una situación de escasez energética y de recursos naturales. La calidad de vida baja drásticamente, por lo que muchos encuentran una escapatoria en el mundo virtual llamado OASIS. El dueño y creador de OASIS ha fallecido, y no cuenta con ningún heredero, por lo que decide dejar todo su dinero y la administración total del sistema OASIS al ganador de una competencia singular que se lleva a cabo dentro del mundo virtual. Son tres llaves las que se deben conseguir para abrir tres puertas que te llevarán al “Huevo de pascua” ocultó en dicho sistema de simulación. Los primeros programadores de videojuegos ocultaban estos secretos dentro de su código, para que los jugadores pudieran encontrarlos; los primeros huevos eran la identidad del programador, ya que las primeras compañías no le daban el merecido crédito a sus empleados, y era cuando recurrían a ocultar estas joyas de código en el juego.
Un joven estudiante logra descifrar la primera pista para encontrar la primera llave, al hacerlo provoca un movimiento masivo de jugadores dispuesto a todo por obtener el absoluto control de OASIS. Inclusive, una empresa multinacional de comunicaciones llamada IOI, intenta hacerse dueña del sistema de simulación, pero la única manera de hacerlo es obtener ellos mismos las tres llaves. Un ejercito de empleados dedicados a jugar en el sistema de simulación, buscarán ser los dueños finales sin importar el precio que tengan que pagar o las artimañas que tengan que utilizar para lograrlo.
Conforme avanza la competencia, múltiples referencias aparecen descritas en el libro: juegos de rol al estilo Calabozos y Dragones, canciones de la década de los 80’s, series de televisión y películas de culto para el mundo de los geeks/nerd. Así mismo, referencias a autores de ciencia ficción hacen su aparición también en el libro, desde Harry Potter hasta El Juego de Ender. Los participantes deben vencer los acertijos y conocer el mundo de los videojuegos para poder encontrar las siguientes llaves. El final tiene el ingrediente perfecto de emoción y desenlace, quienes hemos estados horas jugando videojuegos para acabar uno solo, entendemos el sentimiento de haber terminado exhausto pero satisfecho de completar 26 niveles en un solo fin de semana.
Tal vez la fórmula de Ernest Cline sea bastante simple y solo haga referencias a autores, libros, películas y hobbies que muchos adultos añoramos de nuestra infancia y adolescencia, incluido el manga. Pero debo decir que en mi particular punto de vista, ha surtido efecto. En la página 60 de la edición de NOVA, se lista los autores favoritos del creador de OASIS, y es gratificante encontrar a grandes maestros de la ciencia ficción y literatura cyberpunk referenciados en la novela. Además, conforme avanzamos en la lectura, encontramos la lista de canciones electrónica y rock-pop ochentero que nos transporta a dicha década. Recordar las series de televisión o las películas de culto, también hacen eco en mi memoria de momentos especiales viéndolas.
¿Hay algo malo? Claro que si: la traducción española. Ser vecino del país que ha producido todo este material de ciencia ficción, fantasía y videojuegos, nos acerca en su lenguaje y entendemos de manera muy local lo que es un Muppet o una “maquinita”; pero que de ahí se le llame “teleñeco” al muppet o “entretenida” a la consola de videojuego, resulta cómico y hasta cierto punto triste. Frases como “guay” y “tío”, me conflictúan ya que no logran darme una imagen de adolescente o jugador joven digital.
El libro no es un ensayo, ni reta al lector a descubrir lo que está diciendo el autor. Es un libro que entretiene y atrapa a todos aquellos nerds de corazón que conocen el mundo de los videojuegos y la cultura alrededor de ellos. Ideal para jóvenes que comienzan a leer, y para algunos adultos que les gustaría recordar su infancia geek. Hasta el momento, es libro que más me ha atrapado y me ha sorprendido al reconocer más del 80% de referencias que aparecen en el libro. Overall thoughts
As a whole, I believe that Ready Player One is an incredibly entertaining and fun read. Fueled by references from different bits and pieces of pop culture, the novel really is a tribute to the various artists, content creators, or general icons, which have affected the author. As a whole, I believe that Ready Player One is an incredibly entertaining and fun read. Fueled by references from different bits and pieces of pop culture, the novel really is a tribute to the various artists, content creators, or general icons, which have affected the author. While the vast majority of the references refer to material from the 70’s and 80’s, the book still easy to understand and enjoy, despite not knowing all of the references (I’m sure there’s more than a few that flew over my head). Rating wise, I’d have to say that the book is a solid 4 out 5. For a more detailed explanation of my thoughts, please read my comments below, though please keep in mind that there might be some minor spoilers.

Plot & Themes
OASIS, a video game that became much more than just a game, it became an escape from life, a second reality. The creator of such game, as one can imagine, became incredibly wealthy and famous. Ready Player One starts by describing the success of the game, and the inevitable death of the creator. Due to his lack of family or heirs, the creator of the game leaves a will and a video stating that whoever can find and solve the Easter Egg hidden in his game will inherit his fortune and control of the game. The task is quite simple, find the keys and open three gates. This hunt is open for nearly everyone, though eventually, the interest and attention die down until someone finds the first key.

What I describe above is simply the start of the story. From there, the author takes us on a very fun, fast and entertaining ride. The story mostly takes place in the digital realm of OASIS, though some sections in the story happen in reality. Through these jumps, we get a glimpse on what became of our world, and how prominent this second reality is. It is stated in the initial chapters that the world went through a big energy crisis and that oil, in particular, took a big hit. This led to a change in dynamics in our world. Even more people fled to cities, overcrowding the metropolitan sections, especially in the poorer zones. There was also a lack of resources, and, as a counterbalance, an increase in crime.

The author explores different topics and themes that are important in our society, though some more subtly than others. Due to the nature of the book, the majority of these topics concern different aspects of technology, not all of which are exclusive to video games (though they are more relevant for those which can or are played online). Some of the topics that are explored in this book are: the value of digital items, digital currencies, anonymity, the changes on socializing online versus in person, online learning, torrents, copyrights, and the distinction between the online and real identity (where the line between the two can be incredibly blurred, or where the two can be very divergent). For societal issues, there is a reference to the phenomenon known as hikikomori, the different views on the press, perceptions on some multinational conglomerates (and to some extent their behavior), smart clothes, smart guns, automated vehicles, and gender and sexual orientation issues.

In spite of my enjoyment of the book, I still have some issues with it. While the majority of the people seem to like OASIS, there are those who don’t. Unfortunately, this view against the increase of reliance on the digital world isn’t as explored as it could have been. This is not the only case or topic that could have been expanded upon, in my opinion. For example, there is one mention or reference to LGBTQ issues in the book. Sadly, since it is introduced quite late in the story, it is not possible to expand much on the subject (however, this doesn’t detract from the main events in the book, so it is a minor issue). Even though the story itself is very simple and not the most original, I still think that the adventure that the protagonist embarks upon is very fun. My biggest problem with this book, unfortunately, are the characters. The characters don’t really have much depth and to some degree are pretty stereotyped and clichéd. There are aspects of the story that suffer from the same problems of predictability.

Language & Narration
In the case of Ready Player One, the narrator also happens to be the protagonist. The narration jumps between describing reality and the digital world. The transition between the two is done seamlessly due to the fantastic use of language and the descriptions of the author. There is a minor inconsistency with the narration, which is that during the start of the novel, there are footnotes utilized to explain some of the references. This style is not used throughout the rest of the work, though the important references are explained by the narrator. The language itself is very easy to follow and very easy to read, making this book incredibly accessible to a wide audience.

Recommendations
I’d recommend this book to anyone that is fond of 70’s and/or 80’s pop culture. I’d also recommend it to anyone that’s interested in science fiction, video games, and, to a lesser extent, to those that are interested in speculative fiction. For those that have read this book and want suggestions on further reading, then rest assured that several books could be suitable. First and foremost, I would recommend taking a look at the more popular and talked about utopian and dystopian books such as 1984 by George Orwell, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, among others. For a more recent example, there’s The Circle by Dave Eggers, which shares some themes with this novel. The books that I’d recommend for those that were more intrigued by the video game aspects, then I’d recommend Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card and Slum Online by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. My last recommendation is for those that liked the system to inherit the fortune left behind by the OASIS creator, to which I’d recommend The Secret Billionaire by Teymour Shahabi.

Fántastico, entretenido y nostálgico. De lo mejor que he leído últimamente, ciencia ficción, si, pero cercana. Todo lo que cuenta el autor es plausible y por eso el texto es creíble al cien por cien. Todos somos Wade, todos, en algún momento hemos querido huir y encerrarnos en un mundo ideal donde la vida son solo un puñado de pixeles y algoritmos, crear una identidad no del todo cierta, controlar lo que los demás vean en nosotros.
