George Pelecanos has mentioned before in interviews that with Shoedog, one of his earliest novels, he wanted to write a no-frills noir thriller that was a send-up to the old paperback pulps that could be read in one afternoon. This reads like a Tarantino movie. Slightly cryptic, to the point, aggressive with punchy one-liners. I am looking forward to reading more of Pelecano's societal-drama writing.

I give this one 3 stars only relative to other Pelecanos' titles. His other books, especially series titles in which he has the chance to develop characters more, are just more appealing. Constantine is no Nick Stefanos nor Derek Strange. Not a bad read though.
