I think I read this in college, but that is a long time ago, so this book was ripe for a re-read. I read my, long since deceased, father's copy, so I enjoyed the pleasure of his occasional marginalia, from when he read it in 1964, mostly in the form of simple underlines. It gave me pleasure to realize that I would have underlined the same passages, observations like, "the white man prefers to keep the black man at a certain human remove because it is easier for him thus to preserve his simplicit

Baldwin's work is as current today as it was when these essays were written in the 1940s and 50s.
