Engrossing tale of a post-apocalypse world that feels all too familiar. This was one of my favorite reads of 2024.

How did I not read this book before now? It is so good; it is well written with big ideas, compelling characters, and a plot that moves. And it is so engrossing because Butler didn't imagine a futurescape with zombies or some other existential threat, rather she imagined the world continuing down the path of climate change, societal schisms, sexual violence, and racism that existed when she wrote this in 1993. This world is terrifying as it's familiar and a potential world, issues of water scarcity and general resources, in a world where we have rising living costs and queues for food banks extending.
I think it's the realism aspect that makes the events that unfold especially terrifying. Whilst it's written in a more distanced narrative, it doesn't make the events that occur any less horrifying.
