Vacillating between 3 and 4 stars. Toni Morrison calls this book "required reading," and I do not dispute her on that. It's a hard book to read, and one that must be read slowly, with time for reflection. To be honest, I think reaction will vary according not only to the reader's race, but to where, when, and how an individual reader came of age, and where he or she has spent time as an adult.
