Very provocative. Racism in today's context is subtle and pervasive. Those of us who are white often can't see it. This book clearly lays out the consequences of "institutional" racism. It also put current unevenly applied legal sanctions in an historical context. It feels like Sisyphus trying to push the rock up the hill but we have to keep trying. ...more

It took me a very long time to read this book, in fits and starts. In many ways, the book filled me with both despair and anger. As of this writing, the book has passed its 10-year anniversary, and it seems to me that things have gone from bad to worse when speaking of mass incarceration and overall inequity in the criminal justice system. Good precis of incarceration as a form of racism, and how it's been used as a tool for control in this country. A good argument for the legalization of pot, as well. However, I cannot believe that jailing people of color for drug offenses was a conspiracy cooked up by venal conservatives.
