4.5 stars. Wow, this story carries a lot of heartbreaking moments and even then, not all hope is lost. It's about revenge and 2 people who originally belonged together and lost their way only to find each other again many years later. Both Raze and Kisa live in their own metaphorical cages, Raze is in an underground prison fighting ring and has no choice but to kill his opponents if he wants to survive and Kisa is the heiress to a mafia empire while being engaged to Alik, a ruthless and cruel fi 4.5 stars. Wow, this story carries a lot of heartbreaking moments and even then, not all hope is lost. It's about revenge and 2 people who originally belonged together and lost their way only to find each other again many years later. Both Raze and Kisa live in their own metaphorical cages, Raze is in an underground prison fighting ring and has no choice but to kill his opponents if he wants to survive and Kisa is the heiress to a mafia empire while being engaged to Alik, a ruthless and cruel fighter, who is also a mafia heir. Raze lives in horrific conditions and is completely black and void on the inside. His only goal is to live long enough to seek retribution on the individual who wronged him in the first place. After so many years of imprisonment, Raze has no clear memory of his identity in the past or the people he knew. He simply has a name of the person he must hunt down when the opportunity to escape comes his way. From there, Raze travels to NYC and crosses paths with Kisa. As for Kisa, she lives in her own personal hell because she has no choice but to bend to Alik's will and to follow her father's orders. For someone who has grown up and seen so much death, Kisa is still very pure of heart and compassion although she is an empty shell of her former self, but she also has the same instinct to survive that Raze has. Raze is not actually a complex character overall, but the product of who he is from his experiences make his journey complex because he has multiple struggles from his pieces of his past colliding with the present. Alik is incredibly cruel and basically psychotic, he owns Kisa and never lets her forget it. What follows is a history of 3 close knit families intertwined and how betrayal and loss split everyone apart to where the events of the story are happening in the present day. There's a lot of bloodshed and violence and this is the only thing that Raze knows even though he's not coldhearted, but he is cold on the inside and outside. Watching Raze readapt to life outside of prison was like seeing someone who was from the wilderness move to the city except that Raze isn't trying to adapt, he is out for one sole purpose, all other aspects of life receive no consideration until he meets Kisa and she brings out strange and unwelcomed feelings and desire within him that feels familiar in some way. What Kisa and Raze live through is hard to swallow on both sides and when the real truth surfaces, it's a cascade of very predictable events, but even so, the words and emotions were flowing freely that I kept reading in anticipation because I had to make sure it ended the way where it would serve justice to the characters. Despite all the darkness, there was still light at the end for Kisa and Raze to fight for so that their struggles were not in vain. ...more

Such a heart wrenching book! It had me hooked from the start. Luca's character is charming, sweet yet deadly at the same time. At some points he just had me in tears. Then he finds Kisa his love of his life. To see how these two were meant to be together. It was written in the stars. Then work their way back together. Is worth all the pain and heartache!!! ...more

Raze is the first book in the Scarred Souls Series by Tillie Cole. This book grabbed my attention from the beginning because of all that the boy saw and felt when he entered Hell, known to the boys that lived there as The Gulag. This boy was told to forget his given name that his mother gave him because from then on he’d be known as 818. 818’s sole purpose in life while living in the Gulag is to survive because in the cage, it’s kill it be killed.
