“Carter Reed” isn’t the story of Carter Reed. It is Emma´s story. She tells her story in first-person narrative. With a few insertions in Carter´s third-person perspective, the reader learns more about Carter´s life absent from Emma.

After she sees the rape of her roommate in her own apartment, she shots the man: The son of a known mobster. Certain, she is a dead person; she goes to Carter Reed to get help. She knows him from childhood on, but has lost contact after her brother, his best friend, “Carter Reed” isn’t the story of Carter Reed. It is Emma´s story. She tells her story in first-person narrative. With a few insertions in Carter´s third-person perspective, the reader learns more about Carter´s life absent from Emma.

After she sees the rape of her roommate in her own apartment, she shots the man: The son of a known mobster. Certain, she is a dead person; she goes to Carter Reed to get help. She knows him from childhood on, but has lost contact after her brother, his best friend, got brutally murdered by the same mob family. To take revenge on his murderers, he has joined the competitive mob family, has killed the murderer of his best friend and has worked for them since then. All the years he watches Emma from the distance and he tries to protect her now. Emma and Carter don’t have to fall in love. They are simple in love.

Carter Reed isn’t the typically mobster. He tries to leave the family with investments in legal businesses and nearly succeed. He is different from other rich protagonists in other romance novels. Besides the fact that he doesn’t seem to have kinky sex preferences – at least they aren’t an issue in the book – his possessiveness is on a normal level. Sure, he wants to protect Emma, wants to keep her safe and she is permanently surrounded by bodyguards, but the thread is real. Emma´s life is in danger. He isn’t overprotective and tries to control her life.

Their relationship is very unique and mature for a romance novel. There are no insecurities and no jealousy. They never doubt their relationship. It doesn’t matter what happens. A breakup isn’t an issue at all. I really love that fact. It is a very good alternation to all the romance novels I read in the past. They are full of all the insecurities of the women and the jealousy of the men. In addition, “Carter Reed” is full of action. It is a great change for once that sex isn’t in the center of the story. It happens, but it isn’t important.

Law enforcement and justice aren’t an issue in the book. All the crime remains undiscovered. The police don’t play a role. Bodies simply vanish. I know it sounds weird and in real life I´m not a violent person, but I really love that Emma has to shoot the murderer of his best friend. That Carter doesn’t do it for her. In other romance novels the men would easily do that for the women he loves. But Carter knows Emma has to do it for her inner peace.
I really like Tijan´s writing style. It is very descriptive and transports Emma´s POV very well. ...more

I have been in love with Tijan writing for a long Time. I have read everything published and unpublished by her. After reading the synopsis of Carter Reed I was intrigued, it was different from any of her other books and I couldn't wait to read it. Carter Reed had suspense, action and a hot dangerous alpha male. Carter Reed was full of suspense and action from the first page and I just couldn't put it down.
