There is an introduction by the author in my edition of the book, written in 2017 as she reflects on what her thoughts were at the time of publishing and what has happened since. She states, "Back in 1984, the main premise seemed - even to me - fairly outrageous. Would I be able to persuade readers that the United States of America had suffered a coup that had transformed and erstwhile liberal democracy into a literal-minded theocratic dictatorship?" I swear I read The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood when I was in high school, but I had zero recollection of it. I thought maybe some of it would come back to me as I read it, but it didn't and instead felt like a completely new read. This kind of fiction used to feel like a remote possibility to me, but the times they are a changin' and this felt frighteningly more prescient than I care to admit. Reading this again in light of the current political climate and recent events in my country was a profound experience. I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't yet read the novel or who read it many years ago. ...more

so many feels. not many of them good... but wow, such a good book. (overuse of commas aside. sorry to mark down for that but wow. and i use more than my share of commas, so this is saying something, i feel.) anyway, can't believe i waited so long to read this! makes me wanna watch the show again to compare.
