Before I tell you about The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd, I must first offer a confession. I consider myself a feminist, but I am woefully ignorant of all the players in the women's suffrage movement. I only learned about Elizabeth Cady Stanton because my friend admires her and named her daughter after her. This was a book club read.

I love the quote from the author's note - "In writing The Invention of Wings, I was inspired by the words of Professor Julius Lester, which I kept propped on my desk: "History is not just facts and events. History is also a pain in the heart and we repeat history until we are able to make another's pain in the heart our own." "

Oh, how I adored this novel. It is written with such honesty and manages to be languid and gripping and horrific and wonderful all in the scope of the same novel.
