My book club was split on this. The few that didn't like it had a hard time seeing the story through the eyes of the seven year-old narrator. The long passages describing the fantasy world shared by her and her grandmother were also a little difficult to navigate through. I really like this book, not for that fantasy world, but because it created a puzzle to solve. What was the grandmother really talking about in her stories? I LOVED Fredrik Backman's novel A Man Called Ove so I was thrilled to be able to receive an advanced reader's copy of his newest novel from Atria Publishing(June 2015).
I vacillated between 4 and 5 stars but am so deeply enamored with the characters that I was easily swayed to a 5. Loved the sly humor in it. Got a little lost in the fairy tale parts. Real life, as always, was a bit messy but sorted itself out.
