After reading The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden, I was a little scared that this book would be similar, and focus too much on folklore and mythical beings. But I was pleasantly surprised. While there are still references to the Russian tale passed down through generations, it takes a back seat to the action of the time...the extreme hardships of new settlers making way in Alaska in the early 1900's and the need to rely on neighbors to overcome those difficult times. This was more of a character driven story than a plot driven story and they were all lovable. Their struggles to survive an Alaskan homestead and their role as parents was so hopeful and heartbreaking at the same time. We knew it couldn't last, but the end did feel a little rushed. But overall, I loved the story and enjoyed the fairy tale retold for adults genre. Is that a real genre?
