I haven't read Hillbilly Elegy yet, and I'm hearing some really mixed thoughts on it. This view of Applachian poverty was both depressing and uplifting. While I wanted to scream at the characters for their choices, it was very good at highlighting how the cycle of poverty can make it difficult to make what I would call good choices.
The definition of female empowerment is considered in this novel, and the conclusion, while probably one of those not so great choices, is satisfying.
