This one was not my favorite, though there were some aspects I loved. The magic is definitely the best part in this one. And I love the way it's treated and accomplished. I love that some spells are like an epic conquest, requiring hours and hours of teamwork and concentration. An enthralling take on an old fairy tale, that keeps the feel of a folktale, but with language and characterization that feel comfortably modern. I don't care if this is based on 100% authentic Polish folklore, or an amalgam of various folk tales, filtered through a Polish-American family's bedtime stories - it has a lot of heart and charm.

I don't want to spoil anything - I had a ton of fun just picking this up and going for the ride. And I'm putting Novik's other books on my TBR pile! ...more

I normally stay away from YA books unless they are re-reads of books that I loved when I was much younger, but gave this one a shot because I enjoyed Spinning Silver so much, and because so many other reviews loved it. I'm glad I did. It didn't have the insipid, mooning, teenage romance that so many YA books seem to need, and instead was full of creative imagery, an immersive world and a story that not just flowed but also pulled me along with it. ...more

I really enjoyed the first half of the book, but then I lost interest. This might have been a 5 star book if I was an enthralled with the whole book as much as I was the first half.
